The champion's book was restricted almost entirely to mares selected by Riddle and Walter Jeffords Sr. As a result, Man o' War was often not bred to the best mares. War Admiral made one more start after the match race in 1938. He won the Rhode Island Handicap at Narragansett Park. In 1939, he won his first start, an overnight race at Hialeah in February, but wrenched his ankle and was retired. His final record showed 21 wins in 26 starts and earnings of $273,240.
